The internet was released to the public twenty years ago, today. It’s odd for me to think of a world without the internet. I was born in 1991, about a month from today, so the internet has existed for my entire life, and I have been using it close to daily for the past ten years. The internet has been my main mode of entertainment and education, and has introduced me to most of the things that I love in life, and without it Dr. Horrible’s Sing-a-long Blog probably wouldn’t exist. That would be a truly devastating loss to humanity.
The internet is already so huge and so widely integrated with everything, and yet it is still very young, in the scheme of things. It is still revolutionizing the way we interface with all kinds of things, for example the advent of smart phones, and of e-books. E-books are changing the entire industry of publishing right now, an industry that has existed for more than a hundred years, and forcing most of the biggest houses into near-bankruptcy. Borders is presently liquidating all of its assets because it didn’t jump on the e-book bandwagon quickly enough. I can’t wait to see the first internet enabled blenders and fridges.
I have no idea what the web will be in the future, but no matter how much it changes, there are some things I am sure will remain much the same. It will always be the content that is king, and the ability to connect people to other people, because ultimately those are the things that matter. Quality content and quality social interaction are key. Without them, or even without just one of them, what’s really the point?
I found the video above here. The article accompanying it is interesting, and thoughtful. I highly recommend taking a look at it. The video itself is just as interesting, and makes me very interested in Semantic Web, something that I have never really bothered looking into. There are a few really great quotes in it, my favorite being “If we only invent the things I can imagine, we will have failed.”
Regardless of what the internet will be like, I am looking happily forward to the next twenty years of it. Though, perhaps it will be overthrown and replaced with something better. Or with nothing? Who knows?
Good night, everyone.
